Here's the brochure which BMW HK knows little about.

How many units of 1M are there? I heard 8 and 12. What's the exact no?

I've ordered one. According to my sales, 12 quota in total for 2011. 4 quota taken even before pricing announced. That's why you would have heard 8 quota left. I believe I'm #5 on the list. Anyway of the 8, it's split in 2 batches. Some will be Mar/Apr production so it lands in HK in May/June. Some will be May/June production so lands July/Aug. Seems Charles has heard quota all taken up.

I thought the video was hilarious. Think it boils down to this - we all know the 1M won't be allowed to beat the M3, stats-wise at least. Same situation with Cayman vs 911. They wouldn't shoehorn the V8 into a 1 series body (although I'm sure it can be done). And they have an existing re-tuned engine on the Z4 sDrive 35is that was supposedly tuned by the engineers at M to supercede the standard 35i specs. Its not a 'pure' M engine separate from the entire range (as a previous E46 M3 owner I'm not crazy about that fact) but taking the entire package as it stands, I wouldn't classify it as a bin parts special either (M3 chassis, M3 rear axle, M differential combined). So you just have to ask if its worth the money they're asking and whats the competition out there.

Oh, another thing. I believe BMW HK has priced it very keenly due to RS3 pricing (HK$639k base, HK$687k with bucket seats) and concerns of a limited pool of buyers (think that plagued the Z4M Coupe). I worked it out ... There is no mark-up vis-a-vis UK pricing. UK is selling for £39,990 OTR ... so its £33,325 excl 20% VAT. Multiply by 12.555 fx rate you get HK$418,500 ... factor in FRT taxes of HK$250,725 and you get to HK$669,225.

Personally I think its gonna be a hoot to drive on track and more usable day to day than my previous 997 GT3 (Clubsport spec).

agree :) but think a lot of us ( and me ) will jump into the buy queue if BMW put a readily available M engine ( E46 M3 / CSL ) into it instead. sad

Hear ya ... but I think we need to steel ourselves for the inevitable. Emission regulations are the main problem. I'm not sure the old block meets the new requirements. Porsche is also heading down the road of smaller cc engines with turbo-charging/supercharging applications for the general models. They are even exploring 4 cylinder engines again. So this problem is happening industry wide. Irritates purists for sure but I've made my peace with it (yes, I wasn't that happy it wasn't a clear cut 'M' engine).

My decision boiled down to this - Do I want to miss out on owning what I think (and so far what most respected journos think) is a nice car just because I don't agree 100% with the current ethos.

How many RS3 would there be? Have they all gone yet? Gosh...these prices are really bargains...
